Newcastle is over 250 miles from London and began as small settlement on the bank of the Tyne in pre Norman times. Today Newcastle's population has risen to around ¼ M people and when joined with Gateshead, the city to the south of the Tyne with 190K people , together they are known as Tyneside.
Like London, Newcastle has an underground train network called the Metro with 60 stations throughout the city which covers all of tyneside and donw to Sunderland with Links to Newcastles International airport.
Newcastle is also home to the Metro centre, which when it was built was the biggest indoor shopping centre in the UK. The city is passionate about it's football team, Newcastle United, also known as the Magpies (black and white strip) or the Toon.
The city has two Universities, Newcastle and Northumbria from which to supply the graduate jobs market. The average price of a house in 2008 was recorded at £164K in the City falling to £125K in the surrounding areas.
The Tyneside area has two universities, the long established Newcastle University and the more recently established Northumbria University. It also has a great many recruitment agencies.
